Medical Gloves

Medical Gloves

Medical gloves, also known as examination gloves or medical gloves, are used in medical procedures, examinations and laboratories to protect users against various hazards. Medical gloves are one of the Personal Protective Equipment that must be used in health centres and laboratory environments to prevent the transmission of infections and protect the skin against irritants.

It is important to wear gloves when handling hazardous chemicals and other materials because they protect our hands from infection and contamination. Protective medical gloves should be selected according to the hazards involved. Nitrile gloves protect against most chemicals and infectious agents. Nitrile gloves also provide safe protection against most solvents, oils and mildly corrosive substances.

Gloves made from natural rubber provide protection against mildly corrosive substances. However, some people are allergic to latex gloves made from rubber and may need to avoid them. If you develop such an allergic reaction, it is recommended that you turn to alternatives.

When to Wear Medical Gloves

Wearing gloves is recommended when your hands may come into contact with:

  • Infectious substances
  • Radioactive substances
  • Chemicals
  • Blood and other body fluids

What You Should Pay Attention To In Medical Gloves

As you need hand control and tactile sensitivity when examining patients, you must ensure that the gloves fit properly.

Some people may be allergic to latex gloves made from natural rubber, so you should make sure that the user or patient is not allergic. If you have a latex allergy, you should choose gloves made of synthetic materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), nitrile or polyurethane.

Because you may work with sharp objects in the laboratory or during an examination, you should be aware that medical gloves can be punctured and you should always change your gloves in case of tearing.

You should wash your hands before putting on medical gloves. You should also clean your hands thoroughly with soap and water or an alcohol-based disinfectant after removing the gloves. Especially powdered gloves may have some irritating side effects on the hands in long use, so hand cleaning after glove use is important.

You should remember that medical gloves are for single use only. For this reason, you should never reuse, wash or disinfect them. In addition, you should not share the glove you use with a friend or another user.
